Informationen
The so-called flute clocks or musical clocks were invented in the early 18th century. The most important builder of these mechanical musical instruments was the watchmaker Charles Clay, who died in 1740. By means of a movable button any time could be set with the desired music.
The German composer Georg Friedrich Händel composed some lovely pieces for the flute clocks. They are all written in 2 octaves, in C major or in A minor. In the 1st collection (no. 1 - 8) there are 2 solo pieces (Sonata & Prélude), the other pieces are composed in two parts. The 2nd collection (No. 9 - 18) mainly contains popular melodies from Handel's operas. This allowed the noble owner to be woken up with his favourite melody.
