The five little pieces for viola and piano were written in 2017 with the aim to create an easy duet in which both players should have to master equal tasks. The musical language used is modal with occasional excursions into tonalities further afield. The rhythmic vocabulary is equally simple. In the first movement, the viola develops a melody over the piano's accompanying ostinato. The second movement uses a repeated sequence of meters reminiscent of Boris Blacher's Variable Metren. Next, there is a simple little waltz. The scherzo-like fourth piece follows a simple rule: the viola plucks an even line of notes, the piano repeats the same notes an eighth note later. The final piece returns to the first piece's key and calm expression. Both hands of the piano imitate the viola's melody in strict canon.
