Davis Campbell Dorward was borne in a Dundee nursing home on 7 August 1933. Both of his parents were schoolteachers in Scotland. His mother, Margaret Edward Boyle, briefly taught mathematics at Dalkeith High School until her marriage to his father, David Gardyne Dorward, who was a country schoolmaster first at Logie Pert near Montrose in North Angus, and from 1938 at Monikie, near Dundee.
